The Lincoln Memorial is a tribute to one of America's best known Presidents and it is also a reminder of what Democracy stands for. Lincoln wanted freedom for all citizens and worked hard on this ideal throughout his presidency. Each year thousands of visitors flock to the memorial and are inspired by its symbolism to bring freedom to the nation.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th 1809 in the then border state of Kentucky. When he was eight his family moved to the then wild country of Indiana where he spent the remainder of his childhood. His strong desire to educate himself took him on the journey that would eventually win him a nomination for President by the Republican Party in 1860. By 1863 on the even of the Civil War he had declared all slaves free by enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1864 he won a second term in office after leading the nation through the Civil War. In 1865 John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln while he was attending a performance at Ford's Theatre. Due to his strong beliefs and integrity Lincoln has become know as Honest Abe.
The Lincoln Memorial is a symbol all this great man fought to achieve. The memorial was built in the style of a Greek Temple and was officially opened on May 30th 1922 by President Harding. It is inscribed with a number of Lincoln's famous words including the Gettysburg Address.
